Okay, let’s do this.
Hey, y’all. I’ve got this here journal-blog-thing so I may as well use it, right? I’ve even got a whole list of possible topics to inspire myself, once we get through this obligatory introduction phase. Plus I take requests!
So, yeah. My name is Amy, and I’m the fat lady in residence here at Fat Lady’s Song. I’m about equal parts miscellaneous fiber artist and assorted Other Stuff artist, and I love to see what sort of fabulous new things arise from combining media. So on the fiber side I’ve been processing raw fleeces into batts and top, dyeing fiber at various points in its process, dyeing yarn, crocheting, knitting, and learning assorted wet and needle felting. I’m also looking forward to learning to weave as soon as I figure out what loom to build. Peg loom? Pin loom? Probably not leaping straight to trying to build a rigid heddle loom. I also do silk painting, shibori and tie dye, as well as marbling/ebru. Oh, and I sew. Not much embroidery?
On the less fibrous art side, I do wire and bead jewelry, paper crafts from papermaking to decoupage, monoprinting, assorted forms of beadmaking (though I have mostly set polymer clay aside for environmental reasons, despite missing it a lot), alcohol ink, basic woodworking, candlemaking, soapmaking, and frankly a bunch of things I’m forgetting.
On a more personal level, I’m a middle-aged neurospicy woman living in Kansas with my husband and dog, with a couple of outdoor cats. I’m thrilled to be able to do what I do - art is a demanding mistress, but she’s also much more willing to wait for my brain to cooperate than a “normal” job ever is. So as trade-offs go, it’s worth it! I’m an avid reader, mostly of speculative fiction, which probably explains why I’m such an enormous geek in other areas as well. I’m trained as a microbiologist but life in the lab wasn’t for me - but I’ve had a grand time putting my scientist skills to use in figuring out the “why” behind assorted art and craft things.
Right. Enough about me. Mostly this is going to be a craft blog, not a personal blog (the art of craft, the science of craft, the philosophy of craft, and a fair number of hows and whys). But at least you’ll know whose nonsense you’re reading, now!
