Hedgeapple Handspun two-ply DK weight yarn

$63.00

Handspun yarn in weight 3/DK, 420 yards and 5.2 ounces, spun from 75% Targhee/25% merino in greens with a hint of orange, plied with a strand of Dorset horn in orange with a hint of green. The colorway is inspired by the Osage Orange (or hedgeapple) tree, a ubiquitous sight here on the plains in windbreaks and hedgerows. With bright green fruits and striking yellow-orange bark, the hedgeapple can be a very visually appealing piece of a landscape, but it isn’t the most cuddly of plants: the thorns will definitely ruin your day if you run afoul of them. Maybe it’s best to stick to the fiber representation form!

The finished yarn measures 14 wpi, spanning the line between sport and DK weight. I’ve opted to class it as a DK weight yarn, but it might well work for that special sport weight project too!

This yarn is finished with a Z twist, meaning it may feel more natural to crocheters and Continental knitters than the majority of commercial yarns - but English knitters needn’t feel left out; it can be knitted that way too! As for weaving, it would make a lovely weft.

Photos are taken in natural light with as much color fidelity as possible, but please remember that screens vary, so from one device to another it may appear slightly different. However, the item shown is the item you will receive.

Yarn is wrapped in a hank. Caking is available upon request.

All my fibers are spun and dyed in a smoke free, pet friendly home.

Care instructions: hand wash finished items in cool to lukewarm water, with gentle detergent or baby shampoo. Do not subject to harsh scrubbing/wringing or sudden temperature shocks when wet unless felting is desired. Reshape and dry flat.

This is a one of a kind item. If you are interested in a larger quantity or would like to purchase Hedgeapple in another format or on a different fiber base, please reach out to me! I’d be thrilled to spin and/or dye up a batch to order. It will obviously vary to an extent from this skein, but the spirit will remain the same.
